Finding out your child has head lice can feel overwhelming, but knowing exactly what you’re looking for is the first step to solving the problem. These tiny insects are a common issue, especially among school-aged children, and they have nothing to do with cleanliness. They are simply looking for a warm place to live and feed. Spotting the Adult Louse
An adult head louse is incredibly small, about the size of a sesame seed. They are tan to grayish-white in color and have six legs. Their bodies are oval-shaped, and they move quickly, which is why they can be so hard to see. They avoid light and will swiftly crawl away from it, so you’ll often spot them near the scalp, behind the ears, and at the nape of the neck.
The Tiny Clue of Nits (Lice Eggs)
While live lice are tricky to find, their eggs, called nits, are much easier to spot if you know what to look for. Nits are tiny, oval-shaped specks that are firmly attached to the hair shaft, very close to the scalp. They are often confused with dandruff, but there’s a key difference. Unlike dandruff, which you can easily flick off, nits feel glued on. They are usually yellow or white when laid but appear darker if the egg inside has hatched.
How to Check for Lice and Nits
To do a thorough check, use a bright light and a fine-toothed nit comb. Part the hair in sections and look carefully at the hair shafts within a quarter-inch of the scalp. Pay special attention to the areas behind the ears and along the hairline at the back of the neck. Running the nit comb through a section of hair and then wiping it on a white paper towel can help you see any nits or lice you’ve collected.
What to Do If You Find Them
Finding head lice is certainly bothersome, but it’s a manageable situation. There are several effective treatment options available, including over-the-counter shampoos and prescription treatments. It’s also important to wash bedding, hats, and recently worn clothes in hot water and to soak hairbrushes and combs in hot water for a few minutes.
